Chimanimani high School

About Chimanimani High School

Chimanimani High School is situated in the mountainous Eastern side of Chimanimani District near the border with Mozambique. The school is right in the location of Ngangu and it is near Chimanimani Hospital. The main road from Mutare to Chimanimani, is an all weather one, and it is 150 km from Chimanimani High School to he city of Mutare.


The school was first opened in January 1984. Parents from Ngangu location, Border Timbers, Charleswood and Makosho sat down and came up with an idea to mold bricks and later on a two classroom block was constructed. The school ground was once used by the Rhodesian Security Forces as a daily rifle range, many parents and teachers picked live bullets left by these Security forces.


When the school was opened in 1984, Mr. John Wilson was the first Headmaster. The other assistant teachers who were there were Mrs. Wilson, Miss Lorraine and Mr. Mhlanga. It started with two classes of form one. The teaching had to be done in the Roman Catholic Church for some time. The parents that time were busy completing the four classrooms and by end of 1986 four classrooms were completed and used as classrooms. When the school started, in 1984, there were 4 teachers and by 1996 the number of teachers increased to 20. Currently, 2024, we have a staff compliment of 32 teachers. The school started with 80 students in 1984 and by 1996 the enrolment rose to 568 students. This year 2024 we have 722 students.


When the school started the following were the subjects which were offered, English Language, Shona, Mathematics, Science, Geography, History, Commerce, Agriculture, Building, Fashion & Fabrics and Food & Nutrition. As we stand now the following were added at Ordinary level; Heritage, Computer Science and Accounts. In 2004 the school opened its doors to the first group of Advanced level students offering Arts (Shona, History, Heritage, Geography, Family and Religious Studies FRS) and Commercial subjects (Accounting, Business Studies, Economics) only.


The school has a history of being District Champions in Soccer and Netball.
